LIGAMENT INJURIES

Ligament injuries in the foot and ankle are a type of injury that occurs when the ligaments in this area are stretched, torn or damaged. These ligaments provide joint stability by holding the bones together. Ligament injuries in the foot and ankle usually occur as a result of sprains, falls, sudden rotational movements or traumatic events.

Causes:
Sprain:
Stretching or tearing of ligaments as a result of too much pressure on the foot or ankle.
Falling:
Falling from a height or incorrect bending of the ankle during a fall.
Sports Injuries:
Especially common in sports such as basketball, soccer and volleyball.
Sudden Rotational Movements:
Injury to ligaments during rapid rotation or change of direction.
Traumatic Events:
Traumatic effects from accidents or impacts.

Symptoms:
Pain:
Pain in the injured area, especially when moving or stepping on it.
Swelling:
There may be swelling at the site of ligament injury.
Bruising:
Bruising or discoloration may occur due to bleeding.
Movement Restriction:
There may be limitation in foot and ankle movements.
Sound (crackle):
During or after a ligament injury, a crackling sound may be heard.

Non-Surgical Treatment Methods:
Rest:
It is important to allow the injured area to rest.
Cold Application:
In the first 48 hours, application with cold packs at 15-20 minute intervals.
Compression:
Use of elastic bandages or compression garments can reduce swelling.
Height:
Keeping the foot and ankle elevated can control swelling.
Pain and Inflammation Control: Painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs recommended by the doctor.
Physical Therapy:
Exercise programs guided by a physiotherapist can improve mobility and strength.

Surgical Treatment Methods:
Surgical intervention is usually considered in cases where the ligament is completely torn or in cases of severe ligament injuries. Surgical options may include:
Vineyard Repair:
Sewing or re-tying a torn ligament.
Vineyard Transplant:
Transferring an intact ligament from another area to the torn area.
Arthroscopic Surgery:
Surgery with small incisions used for minor ligament injuries.
