SPINAL STENOSIS (NARROW CANAL)

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal that puts pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots. This can occur in various parts of the spine and is usually associated with old age. Pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots can cause various symptoms. Here are the causes and treatment options for spinal stenosis:

Causes
Osteoarthritis:

Degeneration of spinal joints and bone spicule formation can lead to narrowing of the spinal canal.
Disc Degeneration:
Deterioration and collapse of the discs can lead to narrowing of the spinal canal.
Spinal Fractures or Trauma:
Spinal fractures or traumatic events can cause narrowing of the spinal canal.
Congenital Conditions:
Congenital anatomical abnormalities can contribute to narrowing of the spinal canal.
Tumors:
Tumors in the spinal cord or surrounding tissues can narrow the spinal canal.
Inflammatory Diseases:
Inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis can cause narrowing of the spinal canal.

Non-Surgical Treatment Methods:
Physical Therapy:
Exercise programs that strengthen the spinal muscles and increase flexibility can relieve the symptoms of spinal stenosis.
Medication Therapy:
Painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs and muscle relaxants can be used to control pain and inflammation.
Epidural Steroid Injections:
Steroid injections can relieve symptoms by reducing inflammation around the spinal cord.
Walking and Exercise:
Regular walking and light exercise in certain positions can help reduce symptoms.
Protective Devices:
The use of supportive devices or corsets can alleviate symptoms caused by narrowing of the spinal canal.

Surgical Treatment Methods:
Laminectomy:
Involves removal of bone tissue on the spinal cord to reduce pressure on the spinal cord.
Discectomy:
Removing part or all of the disc can reduce pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots.
Spinal Fusion Surgery:
A surgical procedure in which two vertebrae are fused together. It can increase the stability of the spine and reduce pressure.
Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty:
Minimally invasive surgical procedures that aim to widen the spinal canal by injecting cement into the vertebrae.
